A-Level pupil Melody Chi has won First Prize in the prestigious Independent Schools Association Essay Competition, in the category for essays on English and Linguistics.
Melody’s essay examined ambivalent attitudes towards love, memory and celebration in two poems: A Birthday by the 19th century English poet Christina Rossetti and Sheng Zha Zi by the Chinese writer Lü Bicheng.
We congratulate Melody on her achievement, not only as an essayist but also as a translator. Before undertaking her inter-textual study, Melody had to translate Bicheng’s poem from an archaic form of Mandarin into English, a tricky task considering this form of Mandarin lacks some of the key constituents of the English language, such as clear distinctions between the tenses of verbs. Melody rose to this challenge most impressively and we are delighted that her outstanding achievement has been recognised.
